Fear and anxiety of dental treatments cause several people to refrain from visiting the dentist’s office. At Lithia Springs Family Dentistry, we offer state-of-the-art sedation dentistry services to help all our patients feel comfortable and relaxed during their dental treatments.
We offer the following types of sedation at our practice:
Local Anesthesia: Local anesthesia is used to prevent the sensation of pain in a specific area of your mouth where treatment is being performed. Local anesthesia works by blocking the nerves that sense or transmit pain. A topical anesthetic may be applied prior to administering a local anesthesia injection to eliminate the pain caused by the needle. Local anesthesia is used in procedures such as fillings, treatment of gum disease, while preparing teeth for crowns, etc. Depending upon the dental treatment that you have undergone, you may need pain-relieving medication after the effect of anesthesia wears off.
Nitrous Oxide Sedation: Nitrous oxide, also commonly known as laughing gas, is an effective and safe option for administering conscious sedation to patients who suffer from dental anxiety. The patient is made to inhale a mix of oxygen and nitrous oxide gas by means of a mask placed over the nose to induce a feeling of relaxation, raising the pain threshold and leaving them stress-free and relieved of dental anxiety. The gas produces an immediate effect of sedation that wears off soon after the flow of nitrous oxide is switched off, leaving little or no effect hangover-like effect. Patients report that the administration of nitrous oxide leaves them in a euphoric state, and they feel as if time has passed very quickly. This is a safe method of sedation for almost everyone. However, you should inform us in case you have a stuffy nose or if you suffer from any respiratory problems.
