Dental veneers, also known as laminates are extremely thin, custom-made shells made of composite or porcelain, that are bonded to the front of the teeth to enhance their appearance and fix the length, size, color, or shape.
Veneers can be used to fix the following problems with the teeth:
- Discolorations and stains
- Wear and tear
- Chips and cracks
- Uneven, misaligned or irregularly shaped teeth
- Uneven spaces between the teeth
Dental veneers can be made from porcelain or from resin composite materials. Porcelain veneers offer better resistance to stains than composite veneers. They also mimic the light reflecting properties of natural teeth. We can advise you on the best kind of veneer material for your teeth. The process of getting veneers for the teeth begins with treatment planning with active participation from the patient to understand the kind of results they want to achieve and helping them understand the procedure. Prior to the application of a veneer, the teeth need to be prepared by removing a small part of the enamel to allow to accommodate for the thickness of the veneer in the mouth. Next, an impression of the tooth is taken and sent to a dental lab where the veneer is made. A temporary restoration is placed on the tooth until then. During the next appointment, your final veneer is placed on the tooth, and the fit and color is determined. We will repeatedly remove and trim the veneer as needed to achieve the proper fit; the veneer color can be adjusted with the shade of cement to be used. Next, to prepare your tooth to receive the veneer, your tooth will be cleaned, polished, and etched- which roughens the tooth to allow for a strong bonding process. A special cement is applied to the veneer, and the veneer is then placed on your tooth.
Once properly position on the tooth, a special light beam is applied to the dental veneer, which activates chemicals in the cement, causing it to harden or cure very quickly. The final steps involve removing any excess cement, evaluating your bite and making any final adjustments in the veneer as necessary.
